Types of Driving Licenses in India

Eligibility Criteria for Driving Licenses

Learner’s License (LL):

• Age:
  • 8 years for a motorcycle without gear (up to 50cc) unlike paid driver.
  • Motorcycle with gear and Light Motor Vehicle (LMV), 18 years
  • 15 years for goods carriage vehicle and 20 years for commercial vehicle.
• Skill: Knowledge about traffic rules and signs.

Permanent Driving License (DL):

• Valid Learner’s License held for a minimum of 30 days and no more than 180 days
• Holder must be competent to operate the category of vehicle for which they have applied.
• Are required to pass the driving skill test.
• Commercial DL or of 40 years = Valid medical certificate (Form 1A)
• Must not be forbidden to drive.

1. Visit the Parivahan Sewa Website:

Although one usually gets a hard copy of driving license, still a digital DL can be downloaded from Parivahan Sewa portal and integrated apps:

1: Through Parivahan Sewa Portal (for Printing Copy)

• Step 1: Open Parivahan Sewa Portal: Visit parivahan.gov.in and choose “Online Services” -> “Driving Licence Related services”.
• Step 2: Choose State: Select Your State
• Step 3: Print Driving Licence: From the “Driving Licence” dropdown menu, choose “Print Driving Licence”.
• Step 4: Fill the Details: Enter your Application Number or Driving License Number, Date of Birth and Captcha.

• Step 5- Submit and Print: Details of your license will be displayed. Click the link to open a PDF with Print button.

2: Using a digital copy via DigiLocker or mParivahan App

• For Android users, Step 1: Download App: Install DigiLocker or mParivahan app from the play store.
• Step 2: Sign- Up or Log-In : The user has to either create an account using Aadhaar number or sign into their account via the registered mobile number.
• Step 3: DL Link : Add your driving License, enter your DL number
• Once fined, 4-you hold DL: there will be a digital driving license in the issued documents. Step This digital version of the copy is legally authentic.

Renewing Your Driving License

• Renew within 30 days before or after expiry.
