How to Check Your Driving Licence Status Online?
A driving license is a legal requirement to drive on public roads of India as per the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988. To check the driving license, its status is important to check its accuracy, check the status of applications or renewals, and meet legal obligations.
This can be done online on the Parivahan Sewa portal or mParivahan app and offline at the RTO.
Methods to Driving Licence Status Check
Two main ways to check driving licence status in India: online through the Parivahan Sewa or Sarathi Parivahan portal, or offline by visiting your local Regional Transport Office (RTO).
1. Online Method: Parivahan Sewa Portal
The driving license status can be checked on the parivahan portal. It is maintained by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The portal is available 24 by 7 without any fee and provides current status updates.
Steps to Check Existing License Status:
- Access the Parivahan Sewa portal.
- From the Informational Services dropdown, select “Know Your License Details”.

- Now input the driving license number in the required format along with date of birth and captcha. Your birth date and captcha verification
- Format: SS-RRYYYYNNNNNNN or SSRR YYYYNNNNNNN (e.g. DL-1420110012345 or DL14 20110012345).
- SS: Character states include RJ for Rajasthan and MH for Maharashtra.
- RR: RTO Code is composed of 2 digits.
- YYYY: 4-digit year of issuance (99 -> 1999 and 12 -> 2012).
- NNNNNNN: 7-digit number which may require padding with leading zeros.
- Format: SS-RRYYYYNNNNNNN or SSRR YYYYNNNNNNN (e.g. DL-1420110012345 or DL14 20110012345).

- Now click on “dl check status” and you can check your existing licence.
- Download driving licence PDF through the portal or save it to mParivahan or DigiLocker for easy access.
2. Steps to Check New Driving License Status:
The most efficient and popularly used method is through the Parivahan Sewa portal, which is run by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India. The steps include:
- Visit to the official website: Parivahan website is https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan.
- Find Services: From the ‘Online Services’ section, click on ‘Driving Licence Related Services’.

- Select State: Pick your state from the dropdown to continue.
- Check Application Status: Press “Application Status” which is usually at the top right and click.

- Enter Details: Complete the relevant fields such as:
- Parivahan Driving licence status by application number (received at the time of submission)
- Date of Birth
- Captcha (security check)
- DL Status Check Online

- Submit and View: Press “Submit,” and the status will be displayed in the screen. The status can be in certain stages like processing, approved, dispatched, or pending verification.
Notes:
- Older licences might need to undergo a format change to the required 16-character format as outlined in the further explained requirements section below.
- There may be a delay in seeing status updates after they are issued because of the system-wide delays in databases, as explained in some guides on the web.
3. Offline Method: Going to the Regional Transport Office (RTO)
Someone not having the internet, or those that prefer face-to-face help, the local RTO is a good and trustworthy option.
- Locate the RTO: Find the nearest Regional Transport Office in your state (e.g., West Bengal, Telangana, or Delhi). Each state’s RTO handles RTO driving licence status queries.
- Required Documents: Carry your application number,ID proof and any RTO receipts
- Go to the RTO in the working hours (commonly 10 AM to 5 PM, closed on holidays).
- Verify Status: The officer can confirm your driving licence status check by application number or check for issues like delays.
